University of Groningen library decorated for complicity in Palestinian genocide

Hier kun je discussieren over University of Groningen library decorated for complicity in Palestinian genocide.

Last night, we engaged in an attack on the University of Groningen (RUG) for its complicity in the ongoing genocide in Palestine. We decorated the front of the library and glued the locks of various entrances to the complex. They told Sikkom they were not happy. Good!

The RUG recently commented on the genocide, with spokesperson Anja Hulshof saying the university is ‘not a political institute and therefore we won’t take a stance’. However, after Russia invaded Ukraine, the RUG did take a stance and froze all ties with Russia and Belarus. This makes it clear that the university could in fact condemn Israel’s decades-long settler-colonial occupation and genocide in Palestine, but chooses not to.

Not only through its ‘neutral’ stance, but also through its partnerships, the RUG has taken the side of the oppressor. It is partners with Hebrew University of Jerusalem, which actively collaborates with Israeli occupation forces and owns several buildings on occupied Palestinian land in East Jerusalem. The honorary chairman of its Executive Board is the CEO of Israel’s largest private arms company, Elbit Systems.

Furthermore, the RUG works with Dell, which provides services to the Israeli military and police, as well as with Siemens, which supplies trains, traffic control systems and other equipment and technology to Israel. They also worked on a project coordinated by Verint Systems, an Israeli spyware company.

To make matters even worse, the library of the RUG is host to a Starbucks. Not only does Starbucks crack down heavily on unionizing workers, it also filed legal action against the union for expressing solidarity with Palestinians.

With our action we wish to communicate we will not let organizations get away with their complicity in the genocide of Palestinians. As long as they keep supporting Israel, they will be a target.

All around the world people are increasingly taking action against zionism, and we invite you to join us. We offer GAZA (Groningen Anti-Zionist Action) as an acronym for anyone in Groningen to use for actions of their own. Let’s build a strong, decentralized anti-zionist movement!

Free Gaza! Free Palestine!

Love and rage,
