On Tuesday June 10th 2014 we will be organizing a demonstration on Dam Square against the human rights violations and corruption behind the FIFA World Cup. Our objective is to stand in solidarity with Brazilians and spread awareness of the unfair game being played behind the game of football that we love.
Examples of foul play by the FIFA and the Brazilian state include:
Over 250,000 families have been forced from their homes to make way for stadiums.
Street children and adults are being killed to 'clean' up the cities that will host the World Cup, so as to not give the appearance of poverty for tourists.
With over $15 billon having been spent, this is the most expensive World Cup ever. As much of this money spent comes directly from Brazil's public funds this money could be spent on improving Brazil's schools and hospitals which are in a dire state.
All the ticket sales and media rights revenues (estimated at $5 billion) made during the World Cup go directly to FIFA without taxation (which is true of every World Cup)
FIFA maintains exclusion zones with a 2km radius around stadiums and fan sites where they control the movement of people and the sale of products, this will put thousands of street vendors out of business.
FIFA have committed countless more acts of corruption and have turned their eye to human rights violations. Most recently Qatar's bid for the 2022 World Cup. There are also allegations that slaves are being used to build stadiums there.
We want to hold FIFA and the Brazilian government accountable for their actions. We believe that our protest is a step in the right direction. By making people aware of the human rights violations that occur behind the scenes of the football game will be able to put pressure onto FIFA and the Brazilian government.
Join us on Tuesday, and show the Brazilian people we support them!
