The future of ACU

ACU has been struggling for a long time with diverse problems. Since November there has been a lot of discussion about these problems. Sadly ACU hasn't been the place for these discussions. Also There are still lots of unanswered questions of groups and people who use ACU. For this reason we invite you to the monthly ACU meeting on the 6th of January.
The discussion started after the publication of the article discussed on https://www.indymedia.nl/node/20220 This article shows apart from a lot of frustration some of the real problems. The individual cases are not suitable to be discussed online, but this text will attempt to clarify a bit without going into individual cases.
ACU background
ACU started as a squat and has been legalised later. The ideology is clearly stated in the statutes: self-organised by the people who work there as volunteers, non-hierarchical, consensus based decision making, DIY (do it yourself) attitude, support direct action, environmentally and animal friendly, non-profit, no tolerance towards racism, sexism, homophobia etc, support local artists, initiatives and so on. The goal is to provide space for like-minded individuals and groups who want to organise events.
Power structures
Over time power structures developed. These power structures are based on several factors which include: understanding and further complicating the technical installations, living close to ACU, seniority, control of finances, not sharing skills, … Not everybody who ended up in a position of power has done so on purpose, but these power structures have made certain volunteers and their friends untouchable for criticism.
Secrecy
There is a culture of secrecy in ACU both towards customers as to volunteers. This secrecy is both a means to ignore criticism and a process which enables people to remain in their positions of power. There is secrecy about problems, finances, techniques and ordering of drinks. The reaction tot the the article discussed on https://www.indymedia.nl/node/20220 shows how secrecy and denial is a reflex of ACU.
Personal attacks
Volunteers who want to discuss problems within the collective are met with denial. If they don't back down after this denial the next step is personal attacks during meetings and by email. These attacks include verbal abuse, ridiculing, (threatening with) physical violence, blackmail, forcing people to relive trauma, etc. This has caused many volunteers to leave.
Decision making
ACU is supposed to be a consensus based collective. This is not how decision making works in ACU. When volunteers wants to force their opinion this is done by over shouting other volunteers at meetings, repeating oneself and talking so long that other people just say yes to end the discussion. When people don't like decisions which are made they just ignore the decisions, this sometimes leads to actual sabotage of other volunteers' work.
Racism
There is both subtle and blatant racism in ACU. The blatant form of racism include the use of racist derogatories to describe both customers and volunteers to other volunteers. When people are confronted the tendency is to deny the racist nature of their comments.
Other forms of discrimination
Apart from racism all other forms of discrimination (including homofobia and sexism) are perpetrated in ACU, partly by volunteers. When people are confronted the tendency again is to deny the discriminatory nature of their comments. A sign to make clear that discrimination is not tolerated in ACU has been trashed and later removed by ACU volunteers.
Harassment
There are severe cases of harassment happening in ACU on a daily basis. Usually this is amongst customers and sometimes ACU steps in and tells the harasser to leave. This does not happen in the majority of cases. An other form of harassment is perpetrated by ACU volunteers, who sometimes use their position as ACU volunteer to enable the harassment. There have been instances of harassment by ACU volunteers which would fall under the legal definition of rape, or attempted rape. These cases are met with denial and secrecy.
Lack of political awareness
Despite ACU being set up as a political centre where party-politics are not welcome, and still advertises itself that way, there is a severe lack of political awareness amongst volunteers. These volunteers argue on a regular basis in favour of nights of political parties, or discriminatory political groups, who argue ACU should be a place open for everybody so should also host nights which explain why discrimination “makes sense”.
Finances
There is a lot of secrecy about finances. The books are not presented when asked for at the meeting. The purchase prices of drinks are not provided when asked for in meetings. The costs of the huge amount of expensive lighting (there is more in ACU then in Tivoli which is way larger) are unclear except for the people buying those lights. The mortgage is said to be really high, but hardly any volunteer actually knows how high. It is unclear to most ACU volunteers how a volunteer-run (so no wages to be paid) place with prices comparable to any other bar does not make huge amounts of money which could for example be used for political activities.
Everybody who has questions or wants to solve ACU problems is called upon to come to the meeting the 6th of January. Door opens at 19:30 and the meeting starts at 20:00.

Het lijkt alsof een aantal mensen goede reden hebben om boos en teleurgesteld te zijn op het functioneren van het ACU - maar dat is nog geen reden om Indymedia op te zadelen met valse berichten. Op acu.nl staan geen opmerkingen over de zaak. Daar wordt het lezerspubliek ook niet wijzer van, dus laten we hopen dat het ACU binnenkort met een wat uitgebreider relaas komt.

It seems that some people have good reasons to be angry and disappointed at the way the ACU is functioning - but this cannot be an excuse to use Indymedia to spread false information.
On acu.nl there is no statement on the matter. This doesn't give much info to the readers either, so let's hope that the ACU will come with a longer statement soon.]
I just want to notice that the message above is not coming from ACU. I am very curious who decided to organize this 'open' meeting and why it is not communicated on the ACU-group or with other colleagues.
Misschien is het ondanks deze (illegale ) oproep weleens verstandig om een dergelijke meeting te organiseren Monique :)
Je bent in mijn visie geen knip voor je neus waard als je de ingezonden kritische artikelen niet serieus neemt.
Je kan deze kritiek toch ontkrachten wanneer je denkt de waarheid in pacht te hebben !
De vragen zijn simpel: De ACU stond voor iets wat al jarenlang op geen enkele manier meer is terug te vinden in het beleid/beheer van een stel gastjes die elkaar de hand boven het hoofd houden.
Er word op geen enkele manier enige transparatie geboden over de stichting/bestuur en alle aanverwante zaken.
Moeten de jaarverslagen niet eens openbaar worden gemaakt om de vrijwilligers te tonen waar zij voor bezig zijn ?
Je kan het nooit iedereen naar de zin maken maar een minimale vereiste lijkt mij om nog eens duidelijkheid te gaan geven voor wat en wie de ACU nog staat ?
Kom maar op met die meeting en sluit niemand buiten die ooit kritiek heeft durven leveren !
Ik zou totaal niet weten waarom we een open vergadering met allerhande buitenstaanders moeten organiseren. Een vergadering met de vrijwilligers, ja die hebben we genoeg. Alle bovenstaande punten zijn ook al uitgebreid besproken in vele ellenlange vergaderingen met alle vrijwilligers. Blijkbaar zijn de conclusies daarvan niet het gewenste resultaat voor een groepje mensen. Alle punten nog eens herhalen met een hoop buitenstaanders gaat geen ander resultaat opleveren. De jaarstukken zijn online in te zien voor vrijwilligers, daar zijn ook regelmatig vergaderingen over. Het bestuur is helemaal geen partij in dit conflict en dat kunnen we maar beter zo laten ook.
Degene die dit stuk heeft gepost is waarschijnlijk iemand die dit kinderachtige en hatelijke gedrag vertoont omdat hij/zij diens mening en visies niet doorgedrukt weet te krijgen bij alle andere vrijwilligers.
Acu is idd concensus- gebaseerd, wat inhoudt dat het kan gebeuren dat dingen die jij denkt te zien of weten niet gedeeld worden door het grootste gedeelte van de andere vrijwilligers.
Blijkbaar kan deze vrijwilliger slecht tegen verliezen.
Het stuk staat vol met leugens en zwaar overdreven aantijgingen.
De meeste vrijwilligers zijn wel degelijk politiek bewuste mensen. Wellicht wel wat minder radicaal, extremistisch en arrogant als de inzender van dit stuk.
Als op vergaderingen mensen zinnige dingen zeggen, en extremistische mensen alleen maar hun standpunten botweg blijven herhalen, en zelfs tot de aanval overgaan op een psychologisch erg gehaaide manier die elke open discussie ondermijnt leidt dat vooral tot frustraties en verdeeldheid.
De financien zijn in te zien voor elke vrijwilliger, en momenteel zijn er 2 nieuwe (jonge) vrijwilligers die ingewerkt worden in de boekhouding. Er is al vaker gezegd dat degene die de boekhouding al jarenlang op zich heeft genomen met plezier hulp zou krijgen bij deze zeer verantwoordelijke taak. Het staat iedereen vrij om meer politiek gerichte feesten en avonden te organiseren. Maar de mensen die dit soort stukken inzenden hebben vooral veel woord, en weinig daadkracht. Ze zijn te lui om daadwerkelijk de handen uit de mouwen te steken, maar hebben wel stinkbakkessen vol commentaar op degenen die elke week heel veel kolen uit het vuur halen, en gewoonweg al het vuile werk opknappen.
Zij zijn degenen die een machtsstructuur willen vestigen, nl de hunne.
Er worden geen politiek a- correcte avonden georganiseerd. Het enige wat er is gebeurd is dat er op 1 vd gay- avonden die het acu onderdak biedt iemand met een verentooi op binnenkwam, en het vervelend vond dat hem werd verzocht om deze af te zetten, ofwel het acu te verlaten. Wat mij betreft kun je prima een open gesprek met zo iemand aangaan, maar dreigen met uitzetten vanwege een relatief onschuldig kostuum vind ik wel heel erg ver gaan. Dan had de als non verklede persoon die er bij was ook aangesproken moeten worden op respectloosheid jegens de christelijke religie....
Ik vind dit soort radicale acties het doel ver voorbij schieten, nl: andere mensen laten nadenken over hun acties en levenswijze.
De bargroep, bestellingen, techniek-groep ed zijn allemaal open groepen, en iedereen kan er aan deelnemen. Als er sprake is van rascistische of sexueel getinte incidenten, dan wordt er door het merendeel van de acu- vrijwilligers geprobeerd om er op een zo zorgvuldig mogelijke manier mee om te gaan.
" Het bestuur is helemaal geen partij in dit conflict en dat kunnen we maar beter zo laten ook." Het bestuur voldoet niet aan de criteria zo als gesteld in de statuten van het collectief die niks aan hun rechtsgeldigheid ingeboet hebben.
Opgemaakt bij een notaris en dus gewoon rechtsgeldig.
Toendertijd is afgesproken dat alle gelden verdiend door hardwerkende vrijwilligers ten goede zou komen aan fondsen/personen die zich non-profit onze gezamenlijke idealen zouden verdedigen.
Hierbij zou niets opgaan aan eventuele salarissen of inversteringen in vastgoed(Strowis).
Verders zou er een ledenraad incl kascommissie ingesteld worden met verregaande bevoegdheden.
Wat is hier van over ?
Het bestuur is dus wel degelijk partij in deze.
