Waar: Roeterseilandcampus, Roetersstraat 11, Amsterdam, Netherlands
Wanneer: 19/06/2020 - 15:30 t/m 19/06/2020 - 18:30

This weekend NRC published another article about a UvA teacher who has been sexually harassing students for years and the UvA again trying to cover it up. This is unacceptable, and therefore on the 19th of June we protest against the UvA and its cover up policies and its structures that enable this sexism and sexual harassment.

Where: Roetersweiland, grass patch on Roeterseiland
When: Friday 19th of June, 15.30.

– Fred Weerman moet aftreden.

ENGLISH:

The now famous words from Rutte “We can’t go back to normal”, sound alarmingly relevant at the University of Amsterdam right now.

In an NRC-article six brave (ex-)students came forward about sexual harassment at their studies. The teacher made multiple jokes a day about sperm and inappropriately touched students on several occasions. The reason the students went to the media, was because the UvA in eight years time never even tried to come up with a solution, but just blamed it on the students themselves. In the period 2012-2016 there was a complaint about this teacher, signed by multiple students and every three times the university didn’t listen to them. Eventually, after having tried it every other way, the students stepped to the highest chief at the faculty, the dean Fred Weerman. He informed the students that there wasn’t a file about this case. Weerman forced the students to compartmentalize their complaint in bureaucratic regulations of the UvA, but when this failed, he ignored it. This was after the incident of last year, where another teacher sexually harassed students and the UvA promised to finally look at this problem structurally.

What this situation shows, however, is that the UvA is inadequately adapt to facilitate serious abuses and even tries to discourage students who come forward. Every student at the UvA who read this article knows that they can’t expect anything from the university. For the board, the reputation of the university is structurally more important, than a safe environment for their students and teachers. In this article it became clear that not the students who were abused, but the abusive teacher gets help from the university. If the first reaction from the board is that “they have a duty of care for the teachers”, we know where their priorities lie.
It’s time that this non-board resigns and we need to look again what structurally needs to change at the university. Through the years there have been a lot of initiatives from students and teachers, that haven’t been taken seriously by the board, one clear example being the call for decolonization of education. Actiongroups tried everything they could, but the UvA shot them down, even sending police to the students. It is now clear that the UvA did this because they wanted to maintain their good reputation, which is more important to them than listening to your students.

Through all the pain, the anger, and the fear, there’s luckily also hope. For years there have been great initiatives, from students and teachers alike, to make the university a better place. This protest has been called into life to unite students and teachers in their fight for a safe learning environment, and also to shine some light on the voices on the university that the board tried to ignore. We want to come together with the people who care about the university and education, and to stand together in solidarity for the people the board doesn’t stand up for. After being silenced for years, the list of demands has become endlessly.

Demands for structural reformation:
- The teacher against who the complaints were filed needs to be laid off, so we can guarantee the safety of a new generation.
- Every complaint that has ever been made at the UvA about sexual harassment needs to be re-evaluated by an external team.
- There needs to be a good structural solution for complaints at the UvA. A taskforce is apparently inadequate.
- Fred Weerman needs to resign. We can’t have a dean that doesn’t listen to his students, especially since the material is so sensitive.
-We need strong signals from The Hague that they are going to stop defunding education. The UvA has put finances above the social security of the students. This is completely the fault of the university, but budget cuts can’t be made when this is how universities try to compensate for them,
- The diversity report from Gloria Wekker (2016) needs to be implemented.
- There needs to be real and official participation from the students, meaning more power than now is given to the FSR and the CSR. Bause of this situation we have become too painfully aware of what happens when students don’t get to have a voice.
- Give teachers stable contracts. This makes it easier for them to report power structures at the UvA, without being afraid to be laid off.

We have a lot to do, but also a lot to gain. A lot of people at the university luckily have a nice and inspiring experience at the UvA. We want to ask everyone to invite students and teachers for who you are grateful, so we can show the strength of the academic community.
