RICO x RIETveld: Connecting South and North

Aankondiging, gepost door: Sidsel Lehn Mehlsen, Red de Iniciativas Comunitarias, ASEED Europe op 06/11/2019 11:04:58

Waar: Gerrit Rietveld Academie , Fred. Roeskestraat 96, Amsterdam , Netherlands
Wanneer: 13/11/2019 - 17:30 t/m 15/11/2019 - 17:30

YOU ARE CORDIALLY INVITED to join us for three sessions of collective elaboration and reflection, delving in to issues of climate and social (in)justice.

The Resistance Saga will be our entrypoint when we open up a discussion and contextualise the role of the people in the Global South. We will chronologically dive into the lived past and present of Guatemala through the lens of the Saga, making an example of what happens when financial and international interests take the government away from the people, and how this impacts a democracy.

We see great potential for a collective, critical analysis of where the missing links between the Global South and North is, and how we can start to connect them. A great deal of the news we consume regarding climate change is related to the Global South, but often the lack of context ends up distorting the reality of the struggle, causing more harm than help. Therefore, we see it fit to link together these two geopolitical areas in order to understand the issue of climate and social justice as one single issue, that we are facing together. We wish to strengthen the bonds through an open platform where thoughts and solutions can be proposed, shared and listened to.

WHO ARE WE?
We met on a field in Brunsbüttel at @Free the Soil in September, and since then we have worked together on this event, focusing on how to approach our concerns about climate and social injustice in a decolonial way, that would allow for more diverse narratives to exist. RICO x RIETveld suggests a collaboration between climate activists from Red de Iniciativas Comunitarias - RICO, ASEED Europe and students from Gerrit Rietveld Academie.
