LEARN YOUR 30 HUMAN RIGHTS AT THE FLORIDA STATE CAPITOL

On Tuesday, January 31st, as part of a state-wide educational program, Youth for Human Rights Florida will give away thousands of free “What Are Human Rights?” booklets to students, at the State Capitol Rotunda and the Capitol Courtyard. The Tuesday event is part of "Children's Capitol for a Day,” when thousands of children, parents, advocates, community leaders and policy makers from throughout the state gather for a day of educational and interactive events and activities in Tallahassee.

The give-aways are not limited to students only. Those educators who want to incorporate human rights education into their curriculum, in whole or in part, can sign up for free Educator’s Kits. The kits include a DVD of short videos that portray in real-life terms each of the 30 human rights contained in the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights; “The Story of Human Rights,” a powerful documentary film that defines human rights by telling the dramatic story of their history and development from earliest times to the present day; a street-savvy, award winning video, “UNITED,” that gives a message of non-violence; “What Are Human Rights?” booklets; an Educator’s Guide; and posters of each of the 30 human rights.

When youth really understand human rights in simple terms such as “No Discrimination”, “The Right to Privacy” and “The Right to Your Own Things”, they realize that not only do they have rights, but that the other person has rights too, which reduces bullying and violence in and out of the classroom. Because it is highly interactive and presented in terms easily understood by young people, The Youth for Human Rights educational program is used throughout the state of Florida as an effective aid in the eradication of bullying and violence in schools, and has been taught as part of Social Studies, History, English and even Drama curricula.

"Children's Capitol for a Day,” is a part of “Children’s Week” program, whose primary sponsor is Comcast. As a Non-profit “One Voice” partner of “Children’s Week,” Youth for Human Rights Florida volunteers also joined students across the state contributing to the tens of thousands of paper cut-outs of children's hands decorated and hung throughout the Capitol Rotunda creating an amazing display of Children's art.

On the entertainment stage, Youth for Human Rights Florida is presenting singer/songwriter Dustin McGahee to entertain participating youth at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday. Dustin has performed around the world in countries such as Taiwan, Switzerland, and Barbados, and is an active Human Rights advocate.
