Tien jaar na de inval in Irak dreigt de Verenigde Staten een aanval op Syrië uit te voeren. Volgens de Amerikanen als straf voor het gebruik van chemische wapens. Nog los van de vraag of het Syrische regime chemische wapens heeft gebruikt is de verontwaardiging van de Amerikanen bijzonder selectief. In de week van de betreffende chemische aanval werd bekend dat de Verenigde Staten in de jaren ’80 toestond dat haar toenmalige bondgenoot Irak chemische wapens gebruikte tegen Iran. Israël gebruikt al jarenlang ongestraft chemische wapens tegen de Palestijnen en ook de Verenigde Staten zelf maakte gebruik van witte fosfor tijdens de oorlog in Irak.

Voorstanders van militair ingrijpen wijzen er desondanks op dat we toch ‘iets’ moeten doen. Maar het is nooit verstandig om benzine te gooien op een brandend huis. Elke vorm van interventie zal het drama dat zich in Syrië voltrekt alleen maar verergeren. Daarnaast vergroot westerse interventie het gevaar dat het conflict zich uit zal breiden tot de gehele regio.

Nederland heeft zich nog niet uitgesproken voor of tegen militair ingrijpen. Maar door middel van de Nederlandse Patriot-raketten aan de Turks-Syrische grens lopen we sowieso het gevaar opnieuw een oorlog ingerommeld te worden. We roepen daarom iedereen op om zich uit te spreken tegen militair ingrijpen:

- Nee tegen buitenlandse interventie in Syrië
- Geen Nederlandse steun aan aanvallen op Syrië
- Terugtrekking van de Nederlandse Patriot-raketten uit Turkije
- Onbeperkte opvang van Syrische vluchtelingen in Nederland.

Om deze eisen kracht bij te zetten organiseren we komende zaterdag een demonstratie in Amsterdam. De demonstratie begint om 13.00 bij de Dokwerker op het Jonas-Daniel Meijerplein. Vanaf daar lopen we via de Blauwbrug, Amstel, Vijzelstraat en –gracht naar het Museumplein, waar we de demonstratie tegenover het Amerikaanse consulaat beëindigen.

De demonstratie richt zich nadrukkelijk tegen elke vorm van buitenlandse interventie in Syrië. We nemen geen stelling voor of tegen het regime van Assad. Daarom verzoeken we alle deelnemers vriendelijk doch dringend om ook geen borden of spandoeken mee te nemen waarin stelling wordt genomen voor of tegen Assad.

Ten years after the attack on Iraq the US is preparing an attack on Syria. According to the Americans the attack is a punishment for the usage of chemical weapons. But even if Assad was the one to use chemical weapons, the American response is at least very selective. During the week of the chemical attack it became clear that the US had allowed it's former ally Iraq to use chemical weapons against Iran. It has allowed Israel to use chemical weapons against the Palestinians and it has used white phosphorus in Iraq.

Proponents of military intervention argue we have to do 'something'. But it's never useful to throw gasoline on a burning house. Every form of intervention will only help to increase the suffering in Syria. And western intervention will also increase the chance for the conflict to spread throughout the region.

The Netherlands has not yet taken a stance on military intervention. But through the Dutch Patriot installations near the Turkish-Syrian-border we risk involvement in another war. Therefore we call upon everyone to voice their opposition to military intervention:

- No to foreign intervention
- No Dutch support for attacks on Syria
- Pull back the Patriot rockets from Turkey
- Unlimited acceptance of Syrian refugees

To support these demands we are organising a demonstration this saturday in Amsterdam. The demonstration starts at 13.00 at the Jonas-Daniel Meijerplein. From there we walk through the Blauwbrug, Amstel, Vijzelstraat and Vijzelgracht to the Museumplein. The end of the demonstration is in front of the American Consulate.

The demonstration is specifically aimed against any form of military intervention. We don't take a stance in favour of or against the regime of Assad. That's why we strongly ask people to leave banners and signs for or against Assad at home.
