Greenpeace wanted to use the icebreaker to protest against wierceniom in the search fields in the Arctic Kara Sea, which would begin next year, the Russian oil company Rosneft and ExxonMobil of the U.S. multinational.
The Russian authorities did not let inside the Arctic Sunrise in the Arctic waters, raising concerns that the ship is able to sail these waters. Meanwhile, Greenpeace says the icebreaker is higher ice class than many of the 400 ships, which this year were given to Russia's navigation through the Northern Sea Route.
