Onze vriend Nashwan ging op donderdag 25-04-2013 onderweg van het Vluchthuis naar een familielid bij de Haagse Markt. Helaas is hij nooit aangekomen. Hij kreeg een hartaanval op straat en overleed later in het ziekenhuis.
Op vrijdag 26-04-2013 kwam zijn familielid naar het Vluchthuis met de boodschap Nashwan nooit is aangekomen bij zijn huis. Niks voor Nashwan, omdat hij altijd liet weten waar hij zat. Na alle ziekenhuizen en politiebureaus te hebben gebeld zonder resultaat, bekroop ons een ongemakkelijk gevoel; waar zou hij zijn? Na vier dagen in onzekerheid hebben we hem vermist opgegeven bij de politie. Na een half uur werden we gebeld met de verschrikkelijke mededeling dat Nashwan een hartaanval had gehad en die niet heeft overleeft, en dat hij in het Westeinde ziekenhuis zou liggen. Hij is 42 jaar geworden.
Het vreemde is dat Nashwan een W document bij zich droeg met zijn naam. Toen wij vrijdag het Westeinde ziekenhuis belden werd er echter gezegd dat hij daar niet lag, ook toen we later belden kwam daar niks uit. De politie is wel naar een oud adres toe gegaan waar hij in 2011 woonde met zijn vrouw en zoon, maar die zijn al in 2011 gedeporteerd naar Irak. De politie heeft echter niet geprobeerd zijn telefoon waar zo’n 40 keer naar is gebeld te checken, dan hadden we het dezelfde dag nog geweten. Deze handelswijze roept veel vragen op bij familie en vrienden.
Afgelopen donderdag is Nashwan herdacht in de moskee, waarna hij naar Shiphol is gebracht om zaterdag terug te worden gevlogen naar Irak om daar te worden begraven. De familie heeft ons verzocht niets op internet te publiceren tot hij terug is in Irak.
Nashwan was een belangrijke en gerespecteerde man in de groep vluchtelingen die al meer dan een jaar aan het actie voeren is. Hij stond altijd voor iedereen klaar en deelde alles met de rest. Het is dan ook een flinke klap voor ons allemaal. Daarom zal er morgen, maandag (6-5-2013) een herdenking plaatsvinden onder de boom op de Koekamp. We verzamelen om 19:00 bij het stadhuis om van daar naar de Koekamp lopen. Hier is er gelegenheid om te spreken, samen te zijn, bloemen te leggen etc.
Nashwan rust in vrede we zullen je nooit vergeten.

On Thursday the 25th of April our friend Nashwan went from the Vluchthuis to his cousin near the Haagse Markt. Unfortunately he never arrived. He had a heartattack on the street and died later in the hospital.
On Friday the 26th his cousin came to the Vluchthuis with the message that Nashwan never arrived at his house. Which was very strange as Nashwah always let people know where he would be. After we had called all hospitals and police stations without any news we got an uneasy feeling. Where could he be? After four days of uncertainty we reported him to the police as a missing person. Within half an hour we got the terrible news that he had sufferend a heartattack which he didn’t survive, and that his body was at Westeinde hospital. Nashwan was only 42 years old.
The strange thing is that Nashwan carried a so called ‘W’ document, which bears his name. When we called the Westeinde hospital after he went missing they told us he wasn’t there. When we called again later we got the same message. After he was found the police went to his old address where he used to live with his wife and son in 2011, but both his wife and son have already been deported. The police never bothered to check his cellphone, where we called him about 40 times. If they would have done, we would have known about his fate the same day. This leaves his friends and family with a lot of questions.
Last Thursday there was a commemoration for Nashwan at the mosque, after which his body was brought to Schiphol airport to be flown to Iraq to be buried there. His family requested that nothing be published on the internet before his body returned home.
Nashwan was an important and respected person within the group of refugees who have been protesting their situation for over a year already. He was always there for everybody, and shared everything with others. His passing is a huge blow to all of us. That’s why, tomorrow the 6th of May we will hold a commemoration for him under the big tree at the Koekamp. We’ll gather at 19:00 at the city hall and will walk to the Koekamp from there. There will be opportunity to talk, say a few words, be together or lay flowers.
Nashwan, rest in peace, you will not be forgotten.
